TAROS is a web and platform engineering studio in Bucharest. We work with scientific institutions, member organisations and international brands. Most of our engagements last for years, and several of the platforms we look after are extended or rebuilt every single year.
What we do
We build websites, commerce systems and custom web applications, and then we keep them running. A good share of the work is not first builds at all. It is migrations off systems that have become a liability, extensions to things we built years ago, and the steady maintenance that keeps a platform current while it stays online and in use.
How we work
We start with the business, the people who have to use the thing, and the constraints. A brief rarely contains all of them, so we spend time up front finding the ones nobody thought to mention, because those are usually the ones that decide the shape of the build.
Then we engineer for the long run: structured content that survives a redesign, code a competent successor can read, and operations that run from a button in the admin instead of a command line. Every project ends with documentation, a rollback path, and an editor who can use the thing without calling us.
Where we work
The studio is in Bucharest, Romania. Very little else about the work is local. We build for organisations in Romania, Switzerland and across the EU, and what we build reaches a good deal further than that: a professional society with members worldwide, brands selling into several markets at once, conferences people fly in for. Most of our clients we have never shared a room with, which has been normal here for a long time.
Based in the EU, working to European principles
The studio is in Bucharest, so GDPR is the law we work under. Day to day it shows up in small decisions more than in policy documents. Fonts come from our own domain. The contact form asks for what an answer needs and no more, and what it collects sits behind the admin rather than one bad query away from the public site. Where personal data turns up in a build, we design for the smallest amount that does the job.
This site runs Google Analytics, and it is the only third-party tag on it. It stores nothing until a visitor agrees, declining takes the same single click as accepting, and there is no question about advertising because there are no advertising tags. The same setup goes into client work.
The name
Taros is an old Romanian word for courage. It went unspoken for about a century. We thought it was worth putting back to work.
